中村修二教授1954年出生于日本，日本日亞化學工業公司技術員。1990年，他開發出藍色高亮度發光二極管。當時，世界上已開發了紅色和綠色發光二極管，但是由于沒有開發出藍色發光二極管，電子視屏領域中的各種色彩無法被充分展現。因此，藍色發光二極管被認為是當時世界上最困難也最熱門的研發項目。獲得電子工學專業碩士學位的中村修二獨辟蹊徑，填補了這項空白，使電腦、手機、超薄電視屏幕的色彩更加豐富，原件使用壽命也大大延長，可將電力消耗降低90％。 自2000年以來供職于美國加利福尼亞大學圣芭芭拉分校。
